What Aticelca 501 is
Aticelca 501 is the Italian evaluation system used to assess the recyclability of paper-based packaging. Published by Aticelca, the Italian technical association of the pulp and paper industry, it evaluates packaging through laboratory testing and assigns a recyclability level, with A+ as the highest. Level B means that the packaging is recyclable with paper. The 2025 edition of Aticelca 501 accepts results obtained using the European CEPI laboratory method, which is the method used to test WaveBag.
Paper-based, and recyclable with paper
WaveBag products are 95% paper by total product weight, according to Offmar's material composition declaration, and the paper used is 100% recycled.
Some paper-based packaging is marketed as "100% paper", but a finished padded mailer necessarily includes small amounts of other functional materials, such as adhesives, printing inks and self-adhesive closures, needed to manufacture, print and seal the pack. This is why the percentage of paper alone does not tell you whether the complete packaging can actually be recycled in the paper stream.
What matters is how the entire pack behaves during the recycling process, and where it can be disposed of at end of life. WaveBag is tested as a complete product by an independent laboratory using a method that reproduces a conventional paper recycling process and evaluates the recovery of usable fibres.
Based on this assessment, WaveBag is rated recyclable with paper at Aticelca 501:2025 Level B and can be placed in paper collection according to local collection guidelines.
For buyers, the relevant claim is not simply how much paper the packaging contains, but whether the complete pack is actually recyclable with paper. That is the claim WaveBag makes.
How to dispose of WaveBag
Put WaveBag in paper collection according to your local collection guidelines. Collection rules vary by country and municipality.
Why recyclability matters for buyers
For procurement and sustainability teams, recyclability is increasingly something that needs to be documented, not simply claimed.
It is also one of the areas addressed by the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), while in many markets packaging fees under extended producer responsibility schemes are linked to the materials used and their end-of-life management.
An independent laboratory assessment therefore gives companies a clear piece of evidence they can include in their packaging documentation when evaluating a new solution.
The Aticelca Level B rating should not be confused with the future PPWR recyclability grades. The EU grading system is separate and will apply under the PPWR framework from 2030.
